A landmark event has happened in the world of artificial intelligence! The company xAI, founded by Ilon Musk in the summer of 2023, has published the source code of its chatbot Grok. But let's talk about everything in order.
Inside Grok uses the Grok-1 language model, which contains an unreal 314 billion parameters. Can you imagine what a massive amount of information that is? In an open publication, xAI has provided the weights of the underlying model itself and its architecture. And the Grok-1 training process was not completed until October 2023.
The key point is that the company distributed the code under the Apache 2.0 license. This means that any enthusiast or commercial organization can freely use Grok for their needs. The only thing that was not included in the publication is data for training the model.
Well, the public was able to get acquainted with the chatbot Grok in November 2023, when it was presented to the world. However, access to it so far have only subscribers of social network X with a paid tariff Premium + for $ 16 per month.
According to the developers, Grok is able not only to conduct witty dialogs, but also to answer provocative "sharp" questions, which are usually blocked in AI-systems. Apparently, it's not without reason that they compare their bot to the rebellious spirit of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
And before publishing the code, in March 2024, Musk announced this intention, stating xAI's ambition to be the "most transparent and truth-oriented" platform. Before that, though, he sued OpenAI, accusing them of straying from non-profit principles and forgetting the good of humanity.
So now AI enthusiasts around the world can explore, modify and develop the Grok model on an open source basis. This seems to be the beginning of a new era of accessibility and openness in AI development. It remains to be seen how successful xAI's similar experiment with publishing a powerful language model will be.
